Local activities on Rakiura / Stewart Island

  • Wander the many short or longer walks in and around the cabin and Oban township, taking in bush, beaches, and beautiful views. 

  • Relax on the deck or in the hot tub & take in the birdlife, particularly at dawn and dusk. 

  • Head down to Ringaringa Beach & enjoy the ever changing beachscape. Check out the igneous rock formations at the northern end - take care if using the path down the cliffs. 

  • Explore Deep Bay beach & shoreline. 

  • Listen & look out for kiwi on the property, or book a guided tour. 

  • Go on a fishing charter with one of the local fishermen.

  • Paterson Inlet - hire a kayak for a paddle or book a snorkel trip through Stewart Island Adventures (seasonal). 

  • Go for a half day or day trip to a beautiful spot in Rakiura National Park (walking and water taxi options are available): Port William, Freshwater, North Arm, Kaipipi Inlet. 

  • Play a round of golf at Rinagringa Heights golf course. Clubs can be hired from Stewart Island Flights Depot. 

  • Hire an e-bike or car and explore further from the township. 

  • Visit the Rakiura National Park Visitor Centre and/or Rakiura Museum - both located on Main Road. 

  • Take a dip or wetsuit up have a try at gathering your own seafood. 

  • Take in panoramic views of Patterson Inlet from Observation Rock. 

  • Catch a ferry or boat charter to visit the Ulva Island Sanctuary, with or without a guided walk.
